Karandaaz Pakistan is a not-for-profit organization, based out of Islamabad, registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan under Section 42 of the Companies Act 2017. The entity has been seeded by the Enterprise and Asset Growth Programme of the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and our digital finance initiatives are being funded by the Gates Foundation.

Karandaaz Capital aims to support the development of a market for MSME financing by deepening access to growth capital for MSMEs that will result in the generation of broad-based employment in Pakistan and financial returns for Karandaaz. Karandaaz makes investments that are categorized into four buckets: Direct Investments, Wholesale Investments, Strategic Investments, and Green Investments. These investments by Karandaaz help develop pilot investment models and identify new investment avenues and generate learning for commercial capital providers.
Position Summary
Karandaaz is seeking an Associate Investment in the Corporate Investment & Credit (CIC) team who will be primarily responsible for supporting the CIO in undertaking deal origination and developing the pipeline for KRN’s equity investments.
Job Responsibilities
New Deal Origination
- Support deal origination and pipeline development
- Evaluate investment transactions (screening, valuation, structuring, term sheets, negotiations, documentation, value enhancement plan, exit) to invest growth capital in small and mid-size enterprises with potential for profitable growth and sustainable job creation.
Investment Evaluation and Execution
- Prepare detailed financial models and projections incorporating potential business cases and scenarios to enable and support investment decision making
- Calculating the financial impact and attractiveness of the business using multiple valuation models
- Lead the legal, financial and tax due diligence for investment opportunities, including thorough review of industry and company details, and evaluating the overall merits and risks, valuation, and return profiles of companies across sectors.
- Communicate analysis of private equity investment opportunities, results, and recommendations via reports and presentations, including preparing qualitative and quantitative assessments, memoranda, and spreadsheets.
- Lead the negotiation and finalization of transaction documentation
- Lead the execution of transaction documentation and closing action items
- Interact with industry thought leaders and conduct research to identify new investment opportunities
- Collect and interpret data such as company financial statements, price developments, currency adjustments and yield fluctuations.
Portfolio Management
- Actively engage with the management of investee companies and monitor, track and report portfolio performance and generate impact reports.
- Work alongside CIO and deal teams on strategic initiatives related to portfolio companies
- Assist and advise CIO in the Board matters of the investee companies including reviewing the Board papers and other strategic matters
- Collaborate with Finance and Monitoring & Evaluation to track, monitor and evaluate portfolio performance and generate impact assessment reports.
- Prepare documentation for Karandaaz’s internal processes including creating and maintaining annual work plans and supporting internal and external audits.
- Any other task necessary to ensure the optimum performance of the CIC department
Eligibility
Education & Experience
- Preferably a Masters level degree in Business, Economics, Accounting or related discipline from a reputable international or Pakistani institution.
- Specialization in Finance preferred including CFA, CA and ACCA.
- 5-7 years of experience in principal investing, impact investing, investment banking, corporate finance, management consulting or M&A group of a recognized multinational corporation.
- Strong grounding and prior professional experience in financial valuation and business analysis
- Experience in analysis, structuring, execution, and post execution monitoring of principal investments, and/or M&A advisory transactions would be strongly preferred.
- Participation in internal committees will be an added advantage
- Should have professional exposure of working in Pakistan
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Understanding of a not-for-profit organization
- Expert level skill in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Intermediate level skill in Google Suite
- Excellent financial modelling skills
- In-depth understanding of corporate reporting and presentation
- Strong command over oral and written English. Should be fluent in Urdu.
